Four Types of Personal Trainers

1. The Genetically Gifted Personal Trainer

The first kind and most common type of personal trainer is the one who is genetically gifted in the area, who can lift a rock, walk for a block, and looks great! All kidding aside, some people just have good genetics, but they don’t know how to workout very well because they really never needed to learn how to exercise. Plus they rarely have the knowledge of how to personal train another person’s body.

2. The Exercise Fanatic

Another very common personal trainer is the one who is passionate about exercise, but so passionate they never really learned how to exercise. They exercised for hours and years, though extremely ineffectively, even though they did get something out of those thousands of hours of exercising, they could had gotten much more in a small fraction of the time if they just first learned how to exercise. And this type of personal trainer does the same for their personal training client, not very effective workouts at $50 - $500 per session.

3. The Book Smart Fitness Instructor

The third personal trainer type is the book smart personal trainer. They are usually quite small is muscle size, thin actually, but usually cut and very toned, and never won an exercise, fitness, or bodybuilding contest. They like to read a lot about exercise and preach what they have read, but the problem with that is it reminds me of swimming – you can read about swimming until your heart sings, but you’ll never really know about it, until you do it, and this type doesn’t usually do it. They seem narrow minded and on exercise how the books tell them to without any real experimenting with what ‘actually works’,  which where a good amount of knowledge comes from.

4. The Best Personal Trainer

The fourth personal trainer type is the one is has an excellent education on the physical body, is passionate about exercise fitness, and has many years exercising, personal training others and himself, and usually has entered many bodybuilding or fitness contests, and may have even won one or two. That is obviously the best type of personal trainer and worth your money. I’d say in Los Angeles, that amounts to about less than 1% of the personal trainers I have observed, though I have met them, and am truly and fully appreciative when I do meet them and of their qualifications and excellence in fitness and personal training.
