Foods For Healthy Skin

Eating for Younger Healthy Looking Skin For Skin Health, Protection, and Appearance for that Healthy, Youthful, Glowing Look

1. Low Fat Dairy Products

Vitamin A is extremely important to have healthy skin cells and lowfat dairy is one of the best sources for vitamin A. Low-fat dairy food also contains a Vitamin A that is easier for our bodies to assimilate.

2. Berries - Blueberries, Blackberries, Plums, Strawberries

Blueberries, along with Blackberries, Plums, and Strawberries are extremely high in antioxidants, especially for their size! These anti-oxidants ‘clean up’ our bodies and remove free radicals that damage skin cells and potentially damaging the their DNA that sun exposure gives. They also contain phytochemicals which also help protect skin cells, which decreases premature aging, so eating these fruits will help you look younger. Other fruits and vegetables that are high in skin antioxidants are artichokes, black beans, red beans, pinto beans, pecans, and prunes.

3. Salmon, Walnuts, Flax Seeds

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA or EFAs) - Salmon, Walnuts, Flax Seeds (and Canola Oil though artificially made or man made) help with having healthy cell membranes, which are extremely important since EFAs 1. act as a barrier to damaging things and 2. A nutrient passageway for nutrients to go in and out of the cell and waste products to get in and out of the cell. Our cell membranes also hold in water, which is critical for skin cell membrane health. EFAs also protect our skin cells from anything that causes inflammation since they are anti-inflammatory. The most popular essential fatty acids are Omega 3, Omega 6 is also an EFA and must be balanced with Omega 3s, yet our diets usually contain enough. The best sources for Omega 3 is fish, walnut, and flax seed oil.  Other healthy oils are cold pressed, expeller processed, and extra virgin oils – 2 tablespoons maximum are needed.

4. Whole-Wheat Bread, Whole Wheat Cereal, Wholewheat Grains, Tuna, Turkey, Brazil Nuts

Selenium - whole wheat grains, tuna, turkey, and brazil nuts contain high amounts of the mineral Selenium, which if very important for skin health and some studies have show that if there are high levels of selenium in the body, skin damaged by the sun may be much less than if there were low levels of selenium.

5. Green Tea

Green Tea protects cell membranes and may help prevent or at least decrease the possibility of skin cancer by decreasing the amount of damage from UV light - ultraviolet light. Green tea also contains polyphenols which have an anti-inflammatory effect.

6. Water

Good clean drinking water and good body hydration is very important in healthy young looking skin. Water also assists in moving nutrients and waste in and out of our body cells, and when we sweat, we keep our skin looking clean, clear and healthy.
